The main activities of the department

The Department of Ophthalmology conducts the educational process with students, interns, cadets and carries out all types of training (lectures and practical classes, consultations, independent work, control activities) in accordance with standard curricula and programs.

Educational and methodical work

at the department is organized in accordance with the requirements and regulations of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The pedagogical work of the department is to prepare fourth-year students in the compulsory discipline "Ophthalmology" in the specialties "Medicine", "Pediatrics", "Dentistry". The department provides postgraduate training of doctors-interns, doctors-cadets (internships, technical specifications). Ophthalmology classes are held with students of related cycles.

All work programs are provided with educational and methodical complexes that reflect the specifics of professional training of students of each faculty. Teachers of the department introduce modern methods of pedagogy into the pedagogical process, use interactive methods (lectures-presentations, videos of operative interventions, computer simulators of diagnostic, surgical manipulations, etc.), supervision of patients.

In the educational process modern teaching aids are used, the author's methodical recommendations are developed, which is successfully implemented in the pedagogical process, the library fund of the department is constantly replenished.

Much attention is paid to independent work. Tasks for independent work are developed in accordance with the content of the topics studied, and include tasks of different levels of complexity.

Employees of the department provide highly qualified medical and consulting and provide surgical care to residents of Donetsk region.

The main directions of surgical, medical and diagnostic activities of the department:

  • cataract surgery (phacoemulsification of cataracts with intraocular lens implantation);

  • administration of anti-VEGF drugs (treatment of age-related macular degeneration, proliferative and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, central retinal vein thrombosis), subtenon administration of drugs;

  • laser methods of surgery (prophylactic peripheral laser coagulation of the retina, panretinal laser coagulation of the retina, IAG-laser basal iridectomy, IAG-laser dissection of secondary cataracts);

  • antiglaucomatous operations (non-penetrating deep sclerectomy, selective trabeculoplasty);

  • surgical removal of eyelid tumors, inflammatory diseases of the eyelids and removal of foreign bodies;

  • diagnosis, therapeutic and surgical treatment of eye diseases and their prevention.

Scientific activity of the department

Faculty of Ophthalmology working on research work "optimization methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of secondary neovascular glaucoma, lesions of the retina in diabetes, primary glaucoma and cataracts" - Supervisor: PhD, Associate Professor Alexandra Korobov.

The department has 3 candidates of medical sciences, 2 associate professors. The staff of the department carries out its activities in accordance with the duly approved functional responsibilities.

The head of the department, associate professor Korobova Oleksandra Vasylivna is a member of the editorial board of the professional scientific publication "Archive of Ophthalmology".

The department holds scientific and practical conferences, methodological seminars, schools for patients.

The scientific achievements of the teachers of the department are covered in publications in scientific journals, professional collections of scientific papers, collections of materials of All-Ukrainian and International scientific conferences both in Ukraine and abroad.

The main areas of research activities of the department are:

- study of the frequency of different stages of diabetic retinopathy, as well as the nature and frequency of progression of DR in patients with diabetes mellitus;

- study of factors of the system of proteolysis-antiproteolysis (matrix metalloproteinase-9 and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1) in blood and intraocular fluid depending on the stage of diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus;

- study of new risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus;

- study of short-term and long-term results, as well as the nature and frequency of early and late complications of a new two-stage (surgical and laser) treatment of patients with primary glaucoma and cataracts;

- study of the features of the cytokine profile (content of tumor necrosis factor-α and b-growth factor of fibroblasts) of intraocular fluid in patients with primary glaucoma and cataracts;

- study of the effect of cytokines on tumor necrosis factor -α and b-fibroblast growth factor on the nature and frequency of postoperative complications, as well as the effectiveness of two-stage treatment;

- development of criteria for predicting the development of complications after two-stage treatment;

- study of clinical features, features of the course of secondary neovascular glaucoma, which developed on the background of thrombosis of the central vein of the retina or its branches;

- study of clinical features and features of the course of secondary neovascular glaucoma in diabetic retinopathy;

- analysis of the effectiveness, short-term and long-term results of various types of surgery for secondary neovascular glaucoma;

- study of immunological parameters in the blood and intraocular fluid in patients with secondary neovascular glaucoma;

- development of a new, comprehensive safe and effective method of combined treatment of patients with secondary neovascular glaucoma and study of its effectiveness.
